April 2026 Artistic Director Update

Hello Friends of Theatre Nouveau!

First and foremost, thanks to everyone who supported our company in 2025. In particular, we are grateful for all the local merchants, businesses, and individuals who contributed to our “Support an Artist” program, which made it possible to pay all involved in our very successful production of A Modicum of Guilt. As a very small professional company for social awareness, we remain committed to ongoing stipends for artistic and production staff in all our shows.

We are thrilled to launch our 2026 season with an intimate hour with Lisa Stathoplos, who will be performing several chapters of her latest memoir, Chimera – a Shapeshifter’s Journey. Lisa is known to Theatre Nouveau audiences through her roles as Hedda Gabler in A Modicum of Guilt and as Mrs. Percy (the woman in the bombed-out theatre) in The Shakespeare Lonely Hearts Club. Her stories from her memoir are told with her signature irreverent wit, love, and forgiveness. We hope you will join us for one of only two, sure to be riveting, performances on May 15th at 7:00 and May 16th at 2:00 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Belfast. (37 Miller St.) A donation of $15 is suggested at the door – cash or checks only, please.

The first two weekends of October will feature Theatre Nouveau’s production of the new play, A Bribe of Bread – a tragic comedy for frivolous people. Lady Bracknell (from Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest), Mother Courage (from Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage), and Sir Fopling Flutter (a 17th century fop from George Etherege’s Man of Mode or Sir Fopling Flutter) are confined in order to complete the onerous task of book burning. Comedy of Manners clashes with Brecht’s “Epic Theatre” to address an important contemporary topic. Come December, we look forward to another holiday offering.
